Traditional Seder/Passover Meal

The Seder is the ritual meal celebrated on the first night(s) of Passover, commemorating the Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt.

The Order (Seder means “order”)

The meal follows 15 specific steps, each with symbolic meaning.

Christian Connections

The Last Supper was likely a Passover Seder:

  • Jesus broke bread (matzah) – “This is my body”
  • Blessed the cup (likely 3rd cup, cup of redemption) – “This is my blood”
  • The Afikomen (broken, hidden, found) seen by Christians as foreshadowing Christ
  • Lamb sacrifice equates to Jesus as “Lamb of God”
  • Passover blood on doorposts equates to Christ’s blood saves
  • Liberation from slavery equates to Liberation from sin

Timing:

  • Jesus crucified during Passover
  • “Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7)
